EMILY + JORDAN

February 28th, 2020

Emily and Jordan wanted their day to feel like a party, and less like a traditional wedding. Choosing a lakeside piece of land in New Zealand, close to where their families are from, meant they got to share a little piece of home with guests travelling from all over the world.

Emily and Jordan wanted guests to be surprised and delighted, so they chose a wild native bush path for the ceremony, leading guests in on a 10 minute hike in where they gathered around the couple in a circle “forest chapel.”

After the ceremony, everyone moved to a big lakeside outdoor dinner under trees strung with hundreds of lights. As creative people, they worked on every little detail themselves – hand painting plates, foraging and dyeing flowers, even designing a tinsel curtain installation over the dance floor.

From the choices of decorations to their outfits, every decision was made with individuality and sustainability in mind. The couple wanted less waste and things they loved; things that could be re-purposed or worn again later.

“I met Jordan on a fire escape at a mutual friend’s party in New Zealand. We spent two years in a long distance romance, before moving to New York City together. Adventure and travel underpin so much of our relationship, so it made sense that the proposal took place on a surprise trip to Montreal, Canada in midwinter. I hate the cold, but I knew I loved him so I said yes!”

“I took a trip out to LA from NYC to find my dress. On my last day in LA, I managed to get an appointment at the NEWHITE studio, and fell in love with my top and skirt.

I really felt like the designer “got” what I was going for – something that felt editorial, and not super bridal. I was drawn to the different ways it could be styled. I added a belt, then later into the night transformed my outfit by knotting the top at the front and changing into sequined pants.”
